Our Mission
The Genome Informatics Facility is a hub for expertise on the use of advanced sequencing technologies and open source software in biology research. Our mission is to make this knowledge accessible and easy to use for researchers across the university, and to provide data analysis services that help turn "big data" into insights that advance our understanding of biology and evolution. We strive to be a valuable resource for faculty, staff, and students as they explore the frontiers of genomics and bioinformatics.
Contact us at gifhelp@iastate.edu if you have a project that needs analysis or want a review of your grant bioinformatic methods text.

Our Vision
Our vision for bioinformatics is to foster collaborative partnerships between scientists and bioinformaticians, leveraging the power of data and computational tools to unlock new insights into the mysteries of biology and address some of the most pressing challenges facing our world. By working together, we can advance the frontiers of knowledge and drive the development of innovative solutions to some of the most complex problems in biology.
Objectives
- Our primary objective is to serve as leaders in high throughput data analysis and enable faculty and researchers to gain insight into their biological problems.
We have experience in RNA-Seq, transcriptome assembly, genome assembly, genome annotation, functional analyses, proteomics, metagenomics, metabolomics, phosphoproteomics, methylation analyses and script generation for custom project needs. More Information - Collaborate on projects that require significant expertise in bioinformatics
As experimental design becomes more data intensive; the need for bioinformatics expertise on grants to train and guide graduate students and postdocs has become essential to obtaining extramural grant funding. Contact us at gifhelp@iastate.edu for collaborative grant writing opportunities. Let us help you write your next grant or paper. - Develop a centralized resource of bioinformatic expertise
There is a need to increase the communication between isolated bioinformaticians across campus and consolidate our combined knowledge of scripts and pipelines to advance science. Are you a bioinformatician and want to contribute to our bioinformatics workbook?
Authorship
Authorship for facility personnel should be based on intellectual and scientific contribution to the research reported in the paper. For specific guidelines as to whether or not the contributions to your project warrant authorship see these published guidelines. Authorship does not constitute payment for bioinformatic services.
Grant Collaborations
Collaborative grant writing with staff in the Genome Informatics Facility is one way to increase your ability to garner extramural grant funding, expand your repertoire of skills in your lab and ask questions related to your research using high throughput data. Need a letter of support? Email us and get one for free! Want help writing your grants? We now provide this as a service.
Indications that you may want to collaborate with GIF staff:
- Grant review indicates a lack of expertise/knowledge in bioinformatics
- Grant review indicates problems with experimental design, data management, analysis
- Project requires significant bioinformatics expertise
- Project requires training of a graduate student or PostDoc in bioinformatics
- Have a grant with a postdoc but can't find a qualified bioinformatician? Contact us about working with us to accomplish your aims.
